This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We propose to establish a center of biomedical research excellence at the University of Delaware that will focus on the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis. This proposal involves four research projects, each lead by a junior faculty member who will be mentored by senior faculty. In project one, Dr. Novotny will use an animal model to examine the mechanical properties of cartilage tissue. In the second project, Dr. Manal proposes to use a biomechanical model based on MRI and electromyographic data to examine knee kinematics and kinetics while performing activities of daily living. In our third project, Dr. Royer proposes to examine the examine the effects of in-shoe wedges in patients with knee OA on static alignment measures. In addition, the long-term effect of this treatment will also be examined. In the fourth project, Dr. Rudolph will study genu varum ("bowleggedness"), which often leads to arthritis on the medial compartment of the knee. The purpose of this study is to characterize the differences in movement and muscle activity before and after an opening wedge osteotomy with callus distraction to correct genu varum. In addition to the four projects, the core consists of two shared facilities: a Gait Analysis Lab and a Posture and Movement Biomechanics Lab. The Administrative core also funds small pilot projects.
