This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
1. Expand AISES (American Indian Science and Engineering Society). UAF and UAA chapters are strong peer support nuclei for AK Native students in sciences. To link student from rural campuses with the 4 year and graduate institutions, we are assisting in AISES chapter creation such as Bethel?s Kuskokwim campus. Interactions among the chapters will achieve the goals of increased retention and success of STEM undergraduates, peer to peer interactions, and successful transfer to UAA/UAF. INBRE sponsored 24 Alaska Native students from UAF and 10 from UAA to attend the national AISES meeting (Anchorage, November 2004). The UAF chapter was Chapter of the year for the fourth time.
2. Summer health careers institutes. To interest rural high school students, especially young men, in health careers, encourage them to finish high school and to go on for additional training, the successful Galena summer health academy (begun 2004 with 14 Alaska Native students) will continue in 2005. It includes class work, guest lecturers, college credit, CPR, first aid, ETT and rural firefighting certification. In collaboration with communities, students use their new skills with health care providers and public safety personnel in their own communities after the program ends. The program articulates with a ?thirteenth year? health career program of the Project Education Residential charter School (PERS), the Galena City high school, the Interior and Aleutians Campus of the College of Rural Alaska, the Galena Clinic, and Tanana Chiefs Conference.
3. Faculty development for Outreach schools. Programs 3-5 are being developed with Outreach campuses that are diverse as are the needs of their faculty. Projects sponsored to date include travel to professional meetings, for collaboration on curriculum development, for additional training, and for research collaboration with INBRE and other faculty.
4. Outreach Mentoring. This is primarily for travel for faculty and students between Outreach schools and UAF/UAA to participate in undergrad and grad educational opportunities. Goals for this activity are increased retention, research experience, and career awareness.
5. Outreach Student Research Opportunities. This is the Outreach counterpart program to the undergraduate research experience programs (USPS and USRE) of the Administration Core.
6. New initiatives. In late 2006, NIH has said that INBREs can expend funds on outreach to secondary school students. In keeping with the general strategy of working with well respected and established programs, we are working with the main secondary school outreach program at UAF, the Alaska Summer Research Academy (ASRA). We are working with the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital to supplement their course, given the last several years, with additional material on the research behind the clinical findings.

1。扩大A(美洲印第安人科学与工程学会)。
