This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The Microscopy Core Research Facility (MCRF) became a multi-user facility of the Center of Biotechnology (UNL) in 1999 and is now one of the most heavily utilized cores in Nebraska. The MCRF provides the-state-of-art instrumentation and professional services to all researchers from both academic and industrial organizations. The Microscopy Facility is equipped with the following major imaging systems and instruments. Three new Hitachi electron microscopes: H7500-I TEM, S-4700 Field-emission SEM, and S-3000N variable pressure SEM. Two Olympus confocal laser scanning microscope systems with the capacity for simultaneous display of double or triple fluorescence labeled materials. Two advanced fluorescence microscopes with high-sensitivity video/digital cameras: Olympus AX70 upright fluorescence microscope and Nikon TE-300 inverted fluorescence microscope. A Nikon SMZ-800 fluorescence stereo microscope. A Leica CM-1900 cryostat microtome for rapid preparation of frozen sections and Ultra-microtomes. The MCRF Manager and staff have set up strong research collaborations with many at least 30 of the 164 faculty/PIs (from 24 departments in UNL alone) and has been utilized by 60-80 faculty groups annually. The Core has also been involved in undergraduate and graduate education/training programs and has organized demonstrations of imaging systems for ~ 300 students during the past year. In addition, the MCRF has been actively participating in grant application (such as NCV, Redox Center, and Cell Signaling, as well as many individual investigators) and has been a key component of the NCV.
