This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
On August 4th 2006, a Remote Access Data Collection workshop was conducted at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI) in Buffalo, New York. Aina Cohen and Clyde Smith from SSRL and Edward Snell (HWI) organized the workshop that was attended by 34 US and Canadian investigators and graduate students. The workshop started off with a presentation by Aina Cohen that introduced the macromolecular crystallography facilities available at SSRL including the Stanford automated mounting system and the associated cassette system used to transport samples. Attendees also learned how to apply for beam time. Following this, a practical demonstration of the control with Blu-Ice, monitoring and data processing software was presented. The attendees learned how to properly prepare sample pins for automated data collection and how to load and ship sample cassettes. Then, after going over proper safety protocols for liquid nitrogen use, the group donned safety shields, safety glasses and gloves and mounted samples under liquid nitrogen in SAM cassettes. Hands-on practcal sessions also covered seting up the remote access software on the participants laptop computers. Finally, participants were able to control beam lines at SSRL remotely; mounting crystals, moving detectors, changing wavelengths etc. They also were able to collect real x-ray data and process it using SSRL computers.
