This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
During the course of investigating the role of phytochelatins, glutathione-derived peptides, in cadmium inactivation and translocation in plants it was found that the phytochelatin deficient mutant cad1-3 (Arabidopsis thaliana, Col ecotype) overaccumulates copper in roots. Such accumulation is dependent upon cadmium exposure and does not affect the copper content in shoots, either before or after cadmium exposure. It is intended to use the NCMIR to localize the intracellular compartment in which copper is being accumulated.
