This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study is essentially a long-term observational study of the subjects who participated in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT). Assessment of subjects' eyes, kidneys, and vascular system will be made every one to five years using techniques previously used in the DCCT. The only exception to this will be that carotid ultrasound measurements will be carried out every five years to assess the effects of diabetes treatment on the development of macrovascular disease.
