英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. For Project 5, Muntner researches the study of chronic lead exposure and kidney disease. There has been much debate over the past 20 years regarding the relationship between lead exposure and chronic renal failure. The recent study was a single center case-control study including patients with end-stage renal disease receiving dialysis and controls without kidney failure. Study participants are being recruited from the Tulane University dialysis clinics and Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans internal medicine, and family medicine clinics. The primary exposure being studied is body lead burden assessed through X-ray fluorescence. Other exposures to be studied include: blood lead levels, urinary cadmium excretion, and ankle brachial index. Data on confounding variables including blood pressure, body mass index, education, income, occupation, and cigarette smoking will also be collected.
