This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Administrative Core provides efficient service to the Kansas INBRE, assuming most of the time-consuming jobs of this complex, multi-campus initiative so as to improve the ability of Kansas researchers to compete successfully for NIH research grants. The offices of the Core were located in G015/G017 Lied Building at KUMC, but moved in December, 2007, to 3085 and 3085A in the new research building called the Kansas Life Sciences Innovation Center (KLSIC), which is across the street from the previous location. The Core was staffed by the P.I., J. Hunt (40% effort), P. Terranova (40% effort) as Associate Director until December 31, 2007, when he was replaced with P. Smith (30% effort). The Assistant Director and Administrative Officer, H. Chapman (100% effort), is in charge of day to day running of the Core and supervises a 0.75 FTE assistant. She also supervises a 100% effort administrative assistant who works with the IDeA program for the State of Kansas. Our team prepares all financial reports, processes applications for Research Support grants, establishes committee meeting sites and agendas, supplies accurate minutes, develops symposia and carries out daily communication among the INBRE participants. The Administrative Core also oversees the TeleResearch Network which, with the assistance of an administrative supplement, is upgrading communication equipment to all of our ten campuses. This state-of-the art Network facilitates learning experiences and gives researchers access to expertise unavailable locally but available on a state-wide basis. Based on the popularity of the BRIN annual symposium, the Administrative Core has continued to administer a highly popular symposium that brings INBRE investigators and trainees together for one and a half days of intensive research presentations and discussion. The 2007 Symposium took place at the Intercontinental Hotel on the Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri, which is less than ten minutes drive from the University of Kansas Medical Center, home of the Kansas INBRE Administrative Core. Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation (KTEC) Scholars were announced and, for the first time, a state organization for support of life sciences research and technology transfer, KansasBio, gave prizes for the top oral and poster presentations at the Symposium. We are currently considering locations and speakers for the Sixth Annual Kansas INBRE Symposium. A third major function of the Administrative Core is oversight of competitions for proposals for support of pilot and bridging grants, core facilities and recruitments of faculty in cell and developmental biology. This year we also held a competition for the award of four 2.5 year Major Starter Grants. Four outstanding new faculty who had never received substantial funding from NIH were chosen and honored with a reception at the Symposium. Contributions from each of the four major campuses and from the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation (KTEC) supplement Kansas INBRE funds for these awards. For Year 6 we awarded stipends for 23 outstanding prospective undergraduate researchers (Summer Scholars), made 14 pilot and bridging grant awards, 3 star trainee awards, supported 13 core support and recruitment packages, and awarded 8 Faculty Scholar awards.
Hunt(40%的努力),P. Terranova(40%的努力)担任副总监,直到2007年12月31日,他被P. Smith(30%的努力)取代。
