英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The purpose of this research study is to evaluate potential interactions between diesel exhaust particles (DEP) and endotoxin on airway function. Endotoxin is made by bacteria in the environment. It is present in most of the air that we breathe, and is found in higher concentrations in dust from farms. Inhaling endotoxin has been shown to cause symptoms similar to asthma, and we are investigating whether endotoxin exposure at the same time as exposure to diesel exhaust particles leads to more inflammation of the airway. By learning about how DEP and endotoxin affect the lungs, we hope to gain a better understanding of the health problems of farm workers as well as persons with asthma.
