This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
It is estimated that one out of every 75 people born in the U.S. in the year 2000 will get a melanoma in his/her lifetime. Reports indicate that between 8-12% of melanomas occur within family groups and those people having a first degree relative with melanoma are considered to have a 2-3 fold increased risk of developing melanoma.
We have established a high-risk melanoma clinic (Familial Melanoma Research Clinic, FMRC) that acts as a "core" facility to provide a mechanism for investigation of families with an inherited risk of melanoma. This clinic was patterned after the preexisting University of Utah High Risk Breast and Familial Colon Cancer Clinics that provided well-established models for the investigation of inherited cancers.
