This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Inflammatory parenchymal lung diseases are common, and are significant causes of disability and premature death. These diseases are the result of subacute/chronic or chronic inflammatory processes, and are linked to cigarette smoking, either as a cause or a modifying agent. Current methods for the assessment of these disorders include measures of lung function, radiologic techniques such as CT, or radionuclear-based ventilation/perfusion lung scans or lung pathology. These methods are either not specific to the disease, are not objective, or cannot easily be reproduced. We propose to develop an objective, reproducible series of measures specific for inflammatory lung disease detection. These measures incorporate function as well as structure, and quantify the effects of subacute/chronic pulmonary parenchymal inflammation in vivo.
