This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. This project builds on advances in cognitive-behavioral therapy in conjunction with pharmacological modulation of glycine, an obligatory co-transmitter at the glutamate receptor complex. The research specifically investigates the ability of selective glycine site partial agonists and glycine transport inhibitors to accelerate extinction of cocaine-seeking behavior, reduce subsequent reactivity to cocaine cues, and inhibit re-acquisition of cocaine self-administration. The approach serves as a translational interface for development of effective pharmacotherapies to augment extinction therapy for cocaine abuse.
