This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) are at high risk for low bone mineral density, with implications for peak bone mass and fracture risk in later life. They are also deficient in insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), a hormone very important for the maintenance of skeletal integrity. Deficiency of IGF-I may contribute to the severe osteopenia seen in AN. The goal of this proposal is to investigate the acute effects of rhIGF-I on bone metabolism in adolescent girls with AN.
