This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The overall aim of this clinical research proposal is to demonstrate the feasibility of randomized intervention study comparing the effects of consumption of caffeinated coffee, decaffeinated coffee or water on glucose metabolism. If successful, this study will form the basis for a long term definitive trial of coffee consumption, body fat, and glucose tolerance. Specific aims of this study are to 1) assess the adherence of randomized participants to their assigned treatment; 2) to determine the effect of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption on body weight, postload glucose concentrations and markers of insulin sensitivity.
