This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. This study aims to determine the efficacy of CA 125 as a screening tool for detecting early stage ovarian cancer in women at "high risk." Women have been recruited based on family and personal history of cancer and BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation status. A blood draw is done and CA 125 levels are measured every three to six months. Each CA 125 result is evaluated with a computer algorithm to generate an individual specific risk level of developing ovarian cancer. Women determined to be at higher risk are offered trans-vaginal sonography to evaluate their ovaries. As warranted, based on the ultrasound results, women may meet with a gynecological oncologist for personalized management. Enrolled women who have ovaries were originally followed every three months, but the protocol has since changed and the women are being follow-up every six months until the end of the study. Women who have their ovaries removed during the course of the study are asked to participate in one final follow-up to compare a current CA 125 level with previous levels. A separate form is signed by these women to indicate their intent to remain in the study and participate in the final follow-up.
