This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The High Risk Breast Cancer Clinic (HRBCC) is not itself a research study but is a research resource designed to recruit individuals from families with an increased frequency of breast and ovarian cancer. Data and biospecimens from these individuals are then made available for research studies. The HRBCC is one of six international sites funded by the National Cancer Institute which comprise the Cooperative Family Registry for Breast Cancer Studies (CFRBCS). Locally, subjects are identified and referred by physicians throughout the region or are referred from previous studies of at-risk families. Individuals enrolling in the HRBCC provide data about family history, medical and demographic information, and cancer status and treatment. Blood samples are obtained, from which plasma, DNA, and lymphoblast cell lines are obtained. Subjects receive genetic education and counseling, and genetic testing when appropriate. Eight hundred and sixty-six subjects have been enrolled. Additional individuals who carry mutations in breast cancer predisposition genes will be enrolled over the next 4 years. The HRBCC provides biospecimens and data to both local and international researchers wishing to study various aspects of breast cancer. Local investigators apply through the Huntsman Cancer Institute for access to HRBCC resources. Investigators from outside the institution gain access to samples and data from the HRBCC and the other five sites by applying to the Advisory Committee of the CFRBCS.
