This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
This study is designed to determine whether there is an association between serum and tissue concentrations of selenium and the diagnosis of thyroid cancer, and if so, whether the association is gender-specific. The study is a cross-sectional, case-controlled pilot project designed to collect data over a one-year period form a single center. The objectives are four-fold. The first is to determine whether serum selenium levels are lower in patients who developed thyroid cancer within the preceding 10 years, compared with controls. The second objective is to determine whether any relationship between a thyroid cancer diagnosis and serum selenium levels is affects by patient gender. The third objective is to determine whether tissue selenium levels are lower in the thyroid glands of patients with a diagnosis of thyroid cancer, compared with controls. The final objective is to determine whether any relationship between the presence of thyroid cancer and tissue selenium levels is affected by patient gender.
