英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Phase one of the study included a cross-sectional study to describe and compare parent perceptions of provider communication styles among African American (AA) parents from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. A telephone survey was conducted with lower and middle/upper socioeconomic status (SES) AA parents of children 0-5 years of age recently seen at 1 of 7 pediatric primary care sites in Washington, DC. Parent perceptions of provider communication style were measured, including provider's informativeness, interpersonal sensitivity and partnership-building. Bi-variable analysis assessed differences in parent, child and provider characteristics between lower and middle/upper SES parents. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine predictors of parent perception of provider communication style for each SES group. Phase two of the study will include a cross-sectional study of parent provider communication with African American parents of children ages 3-5 years from lower and middle/upper socioeconomic backgrounds. Investigations will also examine the effect of two potential modifiers (maternal self efficacy in interactions with her child's provider and provider communication style) on the relationship between SES and maternal disclosure of psychosocial issues among African American mothers.
