This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Obesity is a growing problem among all Americans and is associated with chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and osteoarthritis. It is also associated with disability, especially mobility impairment, or problems with walking and getting around. Recently, researchers have also discovered that in some people, obesity might be associated with poor aerobic fitness, or problems with breathlessness and fatigue during activity. The goals of this study are to investigate the relationship of body weight with aerobic fitness and mobility impairment. We will study black and white adults of late-middle age and older, assess body weight as well as the amount of fat, muscle and bone in a person's body, and see how body composition is related to mobility limitations. This knowledge will eventually prove useful in deciding which people most need exercise interventions and in designing more useful exercise interventions.'
