PATHOGENESIS OF NON-INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This is a longitudinal study of the pathogenesis of gestational and type 2 diabetes in Hispanic women with gestational diabetes. Main findings are (a)defects in insulin secretion and insulin action in liver and muscle in GDM during pregnancy (b) poor insulin secretion and high glucose levels predict diabetes within six months after pregnancy, (c) poor insulin secretion, high glucose levels and high basal glucose production predict diabetes 11-26 months after pregnancy, (d) oral contraceptives do not increase the risk of diabetes after GDM, (e) additional pregnancy and weight gain increase the risk of diabetes after GDM, (f) treatment of insulin resistance reduces the risk of diabetes and preserves pancreatic B-cell function.
