This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Muscle functional magnetic resonance imaging (mfMRI), in which exercising muscles appear with higher signal intensity (SI) than non-exercising muscles, has been proposed as a tool for examining the metabolic and hemodynamic responses of muscles to exercise. However, its mechanistic basis remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive and quantitative description of the physiological and biophysical mechanisms underlying mfMRI.
