Funding is requested to build a computing cluster dedicated to our research in protein dynamics. We do computer simulations of the motions of all of the atoms in proteins to understand how the molecular motion affects the function of the protein. We are currently modelling one of the key protein complexes in photosynthesis, photosystem II. Our work uses computational modelling to understand how photosystem II works. The computer simulations are used to predict the results of experiments and give us detailed information on the function of proteins at an atomic level. Our research is currently severely limited by access to large computing resources. The 80 microprocessor computer cluster we have requested is a very economical solution to this problem which will allow us to do many many more calculations.
