Recent advances in our understanding of how biological organisms function at the molecular level are made through genetic manipulation. This scientific discipline has contributed significantly to identify the structure and function of genes and their uses in health and agriculture. Yet the introduction of genetic material into cells and tissues of interest remains a limiting step for molecular investigations in many fields. In this RTI grant application, funds are requested for the purchase of a Bio-Rad PDS-1000/He Particle Delivery system ($25,278) with a Hepta Adaptor Upgrade module ($5,720). My proposed research requires a biolistic particle delivery system to examine gene function in novel plant systems capable of performing C4 photosynthesis in individual cells. Currently, this instrument is not available at the University of Waterloo: a) In addition to my research program, its presence would also greatly be beneficial for other laboratories, b) It would be an accessible and well-maintained common equipment available for research and teaching of highly qualified personnel, c) Purchase of this equipment will allow researchers with opportunity to transform many different cell types, d) Increase the performance level at the University of Waterloo.
