Improvement of plant performance for agronomic traits and crop yield was generally carried out by traditional plant breeding methods. However, recent advances in crop improvement are accomplished through biotechnological techniques involved genetic manipulation. Although, this application of plant biotechnology for the genetic improvement has greatly contributed to increase food production and human health, the introduction of genetic material into cells and tissues of interest remains a challenging task in many plant species mainly due to low in vitro regeneration efficiency. In this RTI grant application, funds are requested for the purchase of a Percival tissue culture chamber ($19,440) modified to provide high light intensity. My research program requires a reliable chamber to establish an efficient in vitro regeneration protocol necessary for a transformable system to examine gene function in novel plant species capable of performing C4 photosynthesis in individual cells.
