A fluorometer for measuring mixing and discharge in urban and aquatic environments

Funds are requested to purchase a portable fluorometer for measuring the concentration of a fluorescent dye in urban and aquatic environments. A fluorometer provides accurate measurement of dye concentration. By monitoring the dye concentration after its injection in a water body, the rate of mixing and dilution can be obtained. In addition, by measuring the relative concentration of the injected dye after it is fully mixed, discharges of wastewater in urban systems can be accurately measured. The proposed fluorometer will support the research programs of Dr. D. Zhu, Dr. N. Rajaratnam and Dr. P. Steffler on the dynamics of turbulent jets, effluent mixing in rivers and lakes, hydraulics of urban systems, and modeling and management of water quality in aquatic systems.
