A high-speed Camera for measuring High velocity flows for hydraulics research

Funds are requested to purchase a high-speed camera for measuring high-velocity flows in hydraulic research in the Water Resources group at the University of Alberta. The proposed camera will have a speed of 2000 frames per second and an image resolution of 1000 by 1000 pixels. The proposed camera will support research programs of Drs. D. Zhu and N. Rajaratnam in their studies of: 1) air entrainment by high-speed water jet, 2) dynamics of multi-phase jets in water, and 3) turbulent flows in open channels. In addition, the proposed camera will support other researchers in the Water Resources group in studying rapid flow transients in stormwater sewers, ice jam consolidation and surge propagation, among others. The proposed camera will be compatible with and can be readily integrated into the existing velocity measurement (PIV) system, thus allow the measurement of high velocity flow. Six students are scheduled to use it in their research once it is available. On average, in the first 5 years 10 - 15 graduate students will use it in their research.
