Recent developments in 3D laser scanning and digital photogrammetic technology have provided exciting new methods for data collection in geological engineering and natural hazards. This proposal is for a long range reflectorless total station (1200 m) to be used in association with existing terrestrial 3D laser scanning and digital photogrammetry equipment. Research will involve collaborative work between experts in natural hazards and geological engineering at Simon Fraser University in addition to members of the SFU Centre for Natural Hazards. This surveying instrumentation, in conjunction with scanning/photogrammetry equipment, will be used to undertake rapid and remote topographical surveys allowing for the production of high quality digital elevation models and the monitoring of unstable rock and soil slopes. Areas of application will include landslides (rockslides, debris flows), volcano imaging, ice-dammed lake investigations, and fundamental research into the mechanics of glacier movement. Integration of the total station with state-of-the-art scanning and numerical simulation techniques will lead to significant improvements in the management of BC's natural hazards. A long range total station natural hazard facility will also find application in surface and underground rock mining engineering. Excellent training opportunities will be available to graduate and undergraduate engineers and geoscientists in the use of integrated total station-laser scanning-photogrammetric imaging technologies.
