Live cell imaging is an increasingly important method utilized in cellular and developmental biology. To avoid damage to the cells during imaging, light levels must be kept to a minimum, and this condition requires very sensitive cameras for light detection. We are applying for an ultra-sensitive camera suitable for live cell imaging under low light conditions. This camera will benefit a number of research projects, including projects to understand how the brain is wired during embryonic development, how cilia (small hair-like appendages that protrude from cell surfaces and tissues) function and how proteins get sorted correctly within a cell. The requested equipment will facilitate studies that will increase our knowledge of cellular and developmental processes that are common to all multicellular organisms.
