项目摘要

With the advances of wireless communication and mobile networking, wireless multimedia streaming systems have received a great deal of attention from several research groups in recent years. This is mainly due to their potential audio and video streaming applications such as audio and video conference, live video distribution, as well as remote virtual environment exploration, which is viewed as the basis for a number of multimedia related applications such as  critical conditions monitoring, virtual training, virtual guide malls, online gaming, and video-sensor surveillance,  just to mention a few. Current evaluation of wireless multimedia streaming protocols and algorithms at the University of Ottawa is performed only through simulations or simple custom scenarios and hardware. There is a need to implement and test multimedia techniques and schemes over real scenarios in order to get important measurements and feedback that only a real test bed infrastructure can provide. The main objective of this proposal is to create an enduring wireless multimedia research infrastructure that several research groups at the University of Ottawa can use to build and test collaborative solutions for emergency preparedness applications as well as other multimedia related projects. In this multimedia research infrastructure, researchers would be able to perform all multimedia tasks related to their projects through high-end 3D rendering workstations and high definition displays and multi-display resources for emergency preparedness and monitoring applications, as well as provide researchers wireless  video acquisition, capture and image processing tools. This infrastructure would act also as a multimedia distribution point, where a scalable number of users can connect and remotely interact with the provided resources and/or applications.
