英文摘要
The requested equipment provides essential high-performance computational support for the design & development of combinatorial algorithms by members of the Algorithms Research Group (ARG) and their Highly Qualified Personnel (graduate students & post-doctoral fellows). ARG was founded in 1997 by W. F. Smyth to encourage and promote the work of McMaster researchers, especially junior researchers and HQP, in combinatorial algorithms.  Today ARG has 18 full members with about 50 HQP.  It hosts a regular seminar series that has featured many world-class researchers; in 2005 it initiated and cohosted the Franco-Canadian Workshop on Combinatorial Algorithms, a new conference that attracted about 75 researchers from a dozen countries; by fostering collaboration and exchange of ideas, it has contributed significantly to the research accomplishments of its members and collaborators; its activities attract first-class students of mathematics and computing to McMaster University. Combinatorial algorithms have literally thousands of applications in business, manufacturing, industry, scientific research, data mining, computational biology, and all aspects of information technology and computer engineering.  As detailed in this proposal, many of the algorithms designed by the applicants have large space and/or time requirements that can only be met by the capabilities of the advanced shared-memory multi-processor server that has been requested.  At the same time, provision needs to be made for the algorithmic design & development requirements of HQP who are  supervised by ARG members and working in the ARG Design & Development Laboratory; their processing needs will be met by the proposed grid of high-end desk-top workstations.
