The release of water and air pollutants into the environment is an increasing problem for our industrialized society within Canada and globally. The proposed research deals with understanding and further developing processes that involve the application of microorganisms for the treatment of wastewaters and air emissions. Such biologically based processes are frequently the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient methods for degrading a large number of pollutants within a broad range of waste materials (water, air, soil). This research will enhance our understanding of how these processes are affected by disturbance and how to maximize their performance for a wide range of pollutants. The project will involve 3 Ph.D.'s, 1 M.A.Sc., 5 undergraduate summer students, 10 undergraduate thesis students and 3 postdoctoral fellows who will receive training in bioprocess engineering and the application of biotechnology to developing environmentally sustainable processes.
