Significance of events, cycles and sequences in the sedimentary carbonate record of Anticosti island

Thick, lithologically repetitive succession like Anticosti Island, often present a challenge to a stratigrapher attempting high resolution correlation of such units at a regional scale. Once a systematic section description or a series of systematic section descriptions has been completed, it is possible to analyze the data with a set of standard tools but integrated into the modern approach of cyclostratigraphy. The specific objectives of the proposed research program are to: 1) describe types of event beds and meter- and decametre-scale cycles prevalent in the Anticosti succession; 2) demonstrate their utility for regional high-resolution stratigraphic correlation; 3) test the newly developed Anticosti stratigraphic framework for high-resolution correlation outside the basin using the Gaspe Basin as an example; and more fundamentally 4) develop dynamic depositional models for mixed carbonate-siliciclastic ramp systems of the type represented by the Anticosti succession. In addition to these specific objectives, the broader aims of the research program are to better understand global sea level, climatic and oceanographic changes using sedimentary events, cycles and sequences present in one of thickest and stratigraphically most complete sections in the world spanning the Ordovician-Silurian Boundary.
