A possible invariant functional contribution of the striatum across different cognitive domains

The striatum is a brain structure that is affected in neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease. Its function has traditionally been associated with movement but it has more recently shown to be also involved in cognitive processes such as those required to make decisions. However its specific role is still unknown. In the present project we propose to use state-of-the-art functional brain imaging methods in order to better understand the function of the striatum in healthy adults. In particular, we will investigate whether its role across different cognitive domains (e.g. motor, language) and across different modalities (e.g. vision, speech, movement) is similar or not.
