A deep and thorough investigation of the complex interactions in the Sun-Earth system is fundamental to understanding our universe in general.  Indeed the Sun-Earth system is the only accessible system in the universe where processes like 'magnetic reconnection', wave-particle interaction, cross-scale coupling can be studied in detail via experiments. Perhaps the most interesting aspect is that this is a system where microphysical process (reconnection, current driven plasma instabilities etc.) couple to meso and macro scale process (substorms and storms).    Dynamical processes by which the solar wind energy is transferred to the magnetosphere and to the ionosphere are still not completely understood.  I am going to study the dynamics of the processes in the Sun-Earth system using ground and satellite based measurements.  I am going to primarily use the high-latitude convection pattern as our base feature of the Solar Wind - Magnetosphere - Ionosphere interaction (SW-M-I) and use its dynamical variations in relation to external (Solar Wind) and internal (substorms and storms) drivers. Then I am going to use these results to completely understand the role of ionosphere in the SW-M-I coupling process.
