In a world of rapid growth of commercial wireless services, accommodating the explosive demand for spectrum access, efficiency and reliability becomes increasingly technically challenging. Furthermore, implementation of advanced information services for military applications in a crowded electromagnetic spectrum is a challenging task for communication engineers. A solution is provided by flexible intelligent radios, capable of sensing and adapting to the environment, in which blind signal recognition is an important task. With software defined radio (SDR) products today, intelligent radio is just the next step, and not a leap,   in radio development.The objective of this research program is to develop a framework for advanced signal recognition for both commercial and military applications. Blind signal recognition algorithms will be devised, which relate to signal detection and separation, parameter estimation and equalization, and modulation classification.           New and challenging issues in signal recognition will also be addressed, which are raised by the emerging orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless technologies.Results of this research will facilitate our understanding of the methodologies and techniques which can be used for blind signal recognition. This research will contribute to the development of concepts and solutions for future generation radios. The suite of algorithms developed in this research can serve as an engine for SDR to be used in emerging commercial and military communication systems.
