Manufacturing is a primary driver of Canada's economy. Our competitiveness must be increased to assure our standard of living. This research attacks productivity issues in two areas: metal stamping and metal forging. In stamping, this research will develop new methods that improve the efficiency of raw material usage and tooling cost by evaluating product designs at the initial design stages and making recommendations to the designer that will decrease costs, reduce the use of non-renewable raw materials and energy, and will increase the sustainability of the manufacturing operation. The second project, development of the Intelligent Open Die Forging system, seeks to eliminate the need for expensive custom tooling to produce metal forgings by using programmable flexible tooling to incrementally form workpieces. Parts manufactured through this system will have higher mechanical preformance than parts produced through other means, and will do so with short lead-time, unit production in a Just-In-Time environment.
