Mobility is a key component of many intelligent systems. It enables an agent to be an active participant within its environment. This research project examines fundamental questions related to perception and reasoning for an autonomous agent. How should an agent represent itself within its environment? How should an agent integrate sensor information or perceptual cues to determine its pose relative to its environment? How can an agent integrate sensor information or perceptual cues to estimate its motion relative to its environment? And how can an autonomous agent build a representation of its environment as it moves? Informed by recent research on how biological agents address these issues and similar issues, this project will construct algorithms and robotic hardware to enable an autonomous agent to better understand its environment and its physical position and orientation with respect to it.
