Poor performance of software systems (in the sense of long delays and restricted capacities) is a serious problem for system developers, which causes significant economic loss to software suppliers and users. The rapid pace of technology and time pressure on projects demand faster techniques for analyzing designs and finding problems early in a design cycle. This demands robust models of the system, especially of the software. This project is concerned with better models, rapid model creation, component-based modeling, and with creating standards for specifying performance attributes of software, so that designers can create models easily. It also develops methods to suggest design improvements and high-performance designs, and uses the same models to study reliability and to adapt systems to changes in their workload or environment (autonomic computing).
