Quantum electronics is the study of electronic properties in the quantum limit, i.e., when the charge carriers are quantum in nature. This is relevant to the ultimate miniaturization of modern electronics. We propose to study novel electronic properties of nanostructures (quantum dots, carbon nanotubes, and two-dimensional structures) as well as superconductors. These studies are performed under extreme quantum conditions (very low temperatures, high magnetic fields and high frequencies). The fabrication and processing of the various samples and devices are are also part of this proposal. The important physics we wish to address includes quantum coherence measurements (for quantum computation), correlation physics in low dimensions, high frequency molecular electronics, and superconducting properties. In order to perform these measurements, we have developed various novel tools, such as advanced processing tools at the ten nanometer level, high frequency probes for 50Ghz measurements, and fabrication techniques for carbon nanotubes and superconductors. As part of this proposal we will push these tools much further in order to integrate them and to enter the new era of quantum electronics.
