Submillimeter-wave spectroscopy of unstable molecules

The major goal of our research program is to establish a major facility for submillimetre-wave and terahertz spectroscopy of transient molecules.  This facility uses Backward Wave Oscillators (BWO) as radiation sources and is equipped with state-of-the-art frequency control and data acquisition systems.  It will be used to study the spectra of species such as CH5+ and to train graduate students in this exciting emerging field.  The submillimetre-wave and terahertz region has just opened up for laboratory spectroscopy and space astronomy/aeronomy observations.  The Waterloo laboratory facility will provide indispensable laboratory data such as precise transition frequencies, pressure broadening coefficients, dipole moments, and the identification of new species which only exist as reaction intermediates.
