英文摘要
The proposal in this research is use a CNC router to manufacture parts using a unique forming process called incremental forming (IF).  Incremental forming is unique in sheet metal forming as it extremely adaptable due to the lack of need for part specific forming dies and the use of equipment that is commonly found in machine shops.  CNC routers are used to provide the forming platform and forces.  Instead of forming dies, forming jigs and fixtures are used; these are developed within the research lab as they must fit the CNC router.A laser scanner is needed to scan the parts manufactured using the CNC router and give valuable data on how accurately the part was manufactured.  This is similar to the inspections which are currently done on most manufactured parts. The combination of the CNC router and laser scanner will support my Discovery Grant on determination of the critical forming factors in incremental forming  The research program involves fundamental experimental studies to determine critical factors. By have a CNC router and laser scanner dedicated to incremental forming research the number of manufactured parts can be increased significantly providing greater knowledge of incremental forming.  The knowledge base for incremental forming is very small as there are only a few researchers around the world working with this process.  The is a great need to develop the knowledge base in order to determine where this process is best implement in the manufacturing world.  The significance of Canada pursuing this research is the competitive edge it could provide to our manufacturing industry by allowing them to customize products and develop products in short time.
