The proposed research deals with the experimental and analytical modelling of complex internal flows. Both fluid flow and thermal resistance are considered. Complex internal flows abound in engineering systems. These include but are not limited to: compact heat exchangers, enhanced heat transfer applications, complex internal flow architecture (designed porous structures), micro-fluidic systems, porous media, electronics cooling systems, and systems utilizing membrane technologies. In particular, the fluid dynamics and heat transfer characteristics of these systems is often further complicated by two phase flow and/or non-Newtonian fluid behaviour. The proposal will focus on the development of robust models to facilitate thermal-fluid design of advanced energy systems and on the optimization of these energy systems by means of establishing the best flow architecture which minimizes fluid flow and thermal resistance. The research involves analytical, numerical, and experimental methods. A number of the research issues in this proposal related to compact system modelling are a direct result of industry needs in this field. Finally potential intellectual property pertaining to compact and novel heat transfer devices may be realized with new designs emerging from the research.
