This proposal is for the replacement of an existing high pressure liquid chromatograph (HPLC) that was purchased in July 1991. The current HPLC has been extensively used but its service contract has long expired, necessitating frequent and expensive service to maintain it in a functioning condition. It is connected to a data acquisition system that runs on Windows 95/98. The current HPLC has been used almost non-stop, but is often off-line due to maintenance and repairs. Moreover, the data acquisition system regularly crashes, requiring intervention by an IT specialist. The present request is being made in parallel with a Discovery Grant application that describes a recent breakthrough in our research leading to the enhanced bioproduction of high value molecules, such as neutraceuticals and drug precursor molecules. The requested HPLC would be dedicated to support this research, and would be the sole item of analytical equipment required to undertake it. We are requesting a basic HPLC with 2 detectors, and an up to date acquisition system. Without a reliable, working HPLC, the research could not be undertaken.
