This proposal seeks financial support for the acquisition of equipment to re-liquefy helium boil-off from cryogenic equipment. The reliquefier will be used continuously year-round in McMaster Low-Temperature High-Field Laboratory (Mac LTHF Lab). I founded Mac LTHF Lab in 2002 in the Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research based on funding from NSERC, CFI (Canadian Foundation for Innovation), OIT (Ontario Innovation Trust), and McMaster, with the total budget exceeding $1,000,000. It has a wide variety of cryogenic equipment for NMR, transport, ac susceptibility, and high-pressure measurements. Mac LTHF Lab is by far the biggest user of liquid helium in McMaster. Currently, our helium liquefier in the Brockhouse Institute is unable to supply sufficient amount of liquid helium when Mac LTHF Lab is operating at the full capacity. Our recent acquisition of a top-loading dilution refrigerator and a 16 Tesla superconducting magnet will exacerbate the helium shortage in McMaster. In order to gain the maximum scientific dividend from the large financial investment into Mac LTHF Lab, we need to ensure that affordable and sufficient liquid helium is available on time. The proposed acquisition will not only resolve the helium shortage issue, but also yield significant savings of the operational cost of Mac LTHF Lab. The total savings of our operational cost in the coming 5 years will exceed the modest cost of the acquisition ($50,080) of the re-liquefier.
