Wave Field Synthesis (WFS), based on the Huygens' principle and first presented by Berkhout in 1988, is an audio reproduction method able to render holographic sound images and homogenous sound fields that closely approximate the field emitted by a real source within room boundaries. WFS builds each wave, exactly prescribed, using multiple loudspeakers radiating an ensemble of coordinated elementary sound waves. The correct wave front reconstruction is the principal benefit of using WFS for rendering virtual room acoustics. This RTI grant will equip McGill University's Virtual Presence Laboratory with 128 loudspeakers installed in-wall at the perimeter of the room in order to generate a homogenous, accurate and fully controllable wave field that is undistinguishable from the original environment. Researchers will apply adaptive room compensation techniques developed at the University of Sherbrooke to reduce room reflections and to enhance the audibility of acoustic simulations. The range of simulations includes virtual rooms developed for music performance and recording, and emulations of acoustic environments designed for aircraft cabins and cockpits.
