Work on nanomaterials lends itself for parallel experimentation, where multiple samples are studied at the same time. The nanomaterials of interest in our laboratory include metal nanoparticles with potential applications in nanomedicine and catalysis, as well as semiconductor nanoparticles, usually referred as "quantum dots", characterized by their strong fluorescence that has led to applications as biological markers and as sensors.  In order to handle many samples at the same time one needs the ability to prepare them in parallel using robotics, the tools to carry out parallel chemistry (in our case multiple ultraviolet exposures), and finally equipment to read the results of the experiment. Sample preparation robotics and exposure tools are already available in our labs. The present application deals with the last aspect (reading the results) by requesting support for the purchase of a microplate reader capable of recording absorbance and fluorescence spectra.
