This project will use of the paradigms and tools of photochemistry to invent light initiated methods for the controlled synthesis of nanostructures, which are then tested as catalysts and for biomedical applications that take advantage of their unique properties. The research will advance the understanding of these processes at the molecular level by use of techniques capable of detecting single molecules as they react. With this knowledge, we will change the paradigms of molecular catalysis to improve organic synthesis, both at the laboratory and manufacturing levels. The research serves to educate HQP in areas of catalysis, materials and photochemistry.
