The city of Ottawa lies in the active seismic zone of Western Quebec. Significant earthquake hazards exist in this zone and in Eastern Canada. It was in this zone that the 1935 Temiskaming earthquake, magnitude M6.2, and the 1944 Cornwall-Massena earthquakes, magnitude M5.8, occurred. The phenomenon of seismic soil amplification by soft sediments has been observed in several locations in the Ottawa region and studied by researchers. Their findings highlight the potential of Ottawa soils for very large amplifications, at least for weak motions.
