A new monolithic integration platform will be developed to build photonics based sensors for biological and chemical sensing of different compounds (analyte). The platform uses deposition of doped amorphous silicon on Indium Phosphide (InP) based materials. The InP materials are used to create the active devices like light sources and detectors for the sensor systems whereas the amorphous silicon material is used for creating nano-waveguide based analyzers using evanescent coupling with the analyte to be detected. Development of nanoporous silicon over the amorphous silicon will be investigated to further increase the interaction of the optical mode with the analyte. Surface attachment mechanism of biological and chemical agents on the amorphous silicon will also be studied.
