A light scattering based low-cost sensor for monitoring particulate matter and volatile organic compounds in buildings is proposed. The sensor will allow for automatic control of high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters resulting in reduced energy usage, increased efficiency, and improved air quality within buildings. The sensor not only measures the particulate concentration but also separates air flows according to particle size, allowing the air to be diverted through the right filter for cleaning.
